Current Message: Good Grades and Working Hard
There are important elements missing from the message of Get good grades, Go to college, Get a job, and Work hard. In the hopes of a bright future filled with better opportunities, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and guardians encourage the young people in their lives to attend college with such messages. As heart felt and well-intended those messages are, they alone will not thoroughly prepare our young people for a promising future before, during, or after college.
The same messages were given to Pamela nearly 30 years ago. She followed and lived that advice. The advice worked too, until it no longer did. She became consumed, keeping her head down and working hard, in the process missing the message that working hard was no longer enough. When work hard stopped working, Pamela found herself lagging behind and questioning her capabilities. After realizing there was a missing message, Pamela changed her focus and approach to her career. Pamela decided to share the missing message. She also vowed that she would help others, especially young people, not make the same mistakes that she had made.

She opens up about what she believes she should have done differently and the lessons she has learned over the years. In her message, Pamela encourages and challenges both students and their supporters to think and live beyond getting good grades and working hard.
The Missing Message – Learning Outcomes
What Students Can Expect from this Exchange
For students who do not have many people in their lives to help them navigate the process of before, during, or after college, for students who are encouraged to further their education but fear not knowing how to use their experience to their advantage, and students who simply need encouragement, with her instructional and caring nature Pamela sets them in a direction to:
- Begin thinking outside of their current situation
- Learn how to tap into available resources (e.g. networking, campus centers)
- Take control of their their future
- Navigate and use their experiences to their advantage
What Student Supporters Can Expect from this Message
For anyone; parent, guardian, advisor, who wants a young person to have better and more opportunities than they had or who desires for these young people to advance further than they did in life Pamela’s message will help them:
- Enhance their message beyond Get good grades and Work Hard
- Change their message from What to do to How to do
- Continue to seek knowledge from reputable resources
- Think outside of their current situation
